Aachen: City Guide for Expats
Aachen sits at Germany's western tip, where the German, Belgian and Dutch borders meet, and has around 249,000 residents. A historic imperial city, it is dominated today by one of Europe's leading technical universities and a young, highly international population.
Snapshot
State: North Rhine-Westphalia (border tripoint)
Population: ~249,000
Character: Historic border city, major international tech university
Character and Overview
Aachen was Charlemagne's capital, and its cathedral — Germany's first UNESCO World Heritage Site — still holds his throne. The city's thermal springs gave it a spa heritage, and its gingerbread (Aachener Printen) is famous. But modern Aachen revolves around RWTH Aachen University, one of Europe's top engineering schools, which fills the city with students and researchers from around the world. Its border location means Belgium and the Netherlands (and Maastricht and Liège) are minutes away.
Cost of Living
Aachen is moderately affordable, with strong student demand. Approximate 2025 figures:
Studio (warm, central): ~550–900 EUR per month
1-bedroom (warm, central):Kaltmiete vs Warmmiete. ~700–1,100 EUR per month
Student demand keeps the smaller-flat market competitive. Confirm
Getting Around
Local transport (ASEAG) is bus-based, with regional rail links into Germany and across the borders. The Deutschlandticket (~58 EUR, subject to review) covers German local and regional travel. The compact, hilly centre is walkable, and cross-border connections are excellent.
Job Market
The economy is driven by engineering and technology, research and academia (RWTH and the associated research campus and spin-offs), IT and automotive/mechanical engineering. Demand for engineers and researchers is high, and the cross-border region adds further opportunities. Salaries are good in tech.
Expat Life and English
RWTH makes Aachen one of the more international and English-usable mid-sized cities in Germany, with a large student and researcher community. German still helps for daily life and longer-term roles.
Who It Suits
Aachen suits engineers, researchers and students who want a historic, international, youthful city with top academic institutions and easy access to Belgium and the Netherlands.
