Bonn: City Guide for Expats
Bonn, on the Rhine just south of Cologne, has around 332,000 residents. The former capital of West Germany, it is now a leafy, affluent and unusually international city — a major United Nations hub and the headquarters of some of Germany's largest companies.
Snapshot
State: North Rhine-Westphalia
Population: ~332,000
Character: Affluent, green, international UN and corporate city
Character and Overview
As West Germany's capital from 1949 to 1990, Bonn retains a diplomatic, internationally minded character. It now hosts around twenty United Nations organisations at the UN Campus, alongside the global headquarters of Deutsche Telekom and Deutsche Post DHL. It is also the birthplace of Beethoven, celebrated throughout the city. Leafy, prosperous and walkable along the Rhine, with the diplomatic district of Bad Godesberg and the beautiful Südstadt, Bonn offers a refined and genuinely cosmopolitan quality of life.
Cost of Living
Bonn is more expensive than the Ruhr cities, reflecting its affluence. Approximate 2025 figures:
Studio (warm, central): ~700–1,100 EUR per month
1-bedroom (warm, central):Kaltmiete vs Warmmiete. ~900–1,400 EUR per month

Getting Around
Local transport (SWB) runs a Stadtbahn (shared with Cologne on some lines), trams and buses, plus regional rail. The Deutschlandticket (~58 EUR, subject to review) covers everything, and Cologne is around 20 minutes away by train. The flat Rhine valley is excellent for cycling.
Job Market
The economy is anchored by telecommunications and logistics (Telekom and DHL), the UN and international organisations, federal government offices that remained after reunification, science and research, and education. Many roles in the international bodies are English-speaking, and salaries are good.
Expat Life and English
Thanks to the UN presence and international schools (notably in Bad Godesberg), Bonn is one of the more English-friendly mid-sized cities in Germany, with an established expat and diplomatic community. German still helps greatly for daily life.
Who It Suits
Bonn suits professionals in international organisations, telecoms or logistics, and families who value an affluent, green, cosmopolitan city with strong international schools and an established expat network.
