Braunschweig (Brunswick): City Guide for Expats
Braunschweig, in eastern Lower Saxony, has around 249,000 residents. A historic ducal city, it is now one of the most research-intensive regions in Europe, with a strong engineering and science base and close ties to the nearby Volkswagen heartland.
Snapshot
State: Lower Saxony
Population: ~249,000
Character: Historic city, leading research and engineering hub
Character and Overview
Braunschweig was the seat of Henry the Lion and the medieval Welf dukes, and its lion monument and partly reconstructed old town recall that heritage. Today it is best known as a research powerhouse — among the highest concentrations of research and development spending in Europe — anchored by the TU Braunschweig, the national metrology institute (PTB) and a major German Aerospace Center (DLR) site. Nearby Wolfsburg (Volkswagen's home) adds an automotive dimension.
Cost of Living
Braunschweig is affordable for a research city. Approximate 2025 figures:
Studio (warm, central): ~550–900 EUR per month
1-bedroom (warm, central):Kaltmiete vs Warmmiete. ~700–1,100 EUR per month
Good value with a strong job base. Confirm
Getting Around
Local transport (Braunschweiger Verkehrs-GmbH) runs trams and buses, with regional rail links. The Deutschlandticket (~58 EUR, subject to review) covers it, and Hanover and Wolfsburg are a short train ride away. The flat city is bike-friendly.
Job Market
The economy is built on research and science, aerospace and mobility research, automotive (Volkswagen Financial Services is headquartered here, with Wolfsburg nearby), engineering and IT. Demand for engineers and scientists is strong, and salaries are good.
Expat Life and English
The research and university environment is moderately international and English-usable, especially in science and engineering. Everyday life requires German.
Who It Suits
Braunschweig suits engineers, scientists and researchers — particularly in aerospace, mobility and metrology — who want an affordable, historic city with a deep R&D job market.
