Hanover is the capital of Lower Saxony and a well-connected, green, mid-sized city of around 536,000 residents. Best known internationally for its giant trade fairs, it is an understated, liveable city that is often overlooked — to the benefit of those who settle there.

Character and Overview

Hanover is famous for hosting some of the world's largest trade fairs (the Hannover Messe) and for the lavish baroque Herrenhausen Gardens. The Maschsee lake, extensive parks and the surrounding Eilenriede city forest make it strikingly green. Locals are also said to speak the "purest" standard German (Hochdeutsch), which makes the city a popular place to learn the language. It is calm, orderly and centrally located in northern Germany.

The flat city is excellent for cycling, and Hanover is a major rail hub with fast ICE links to Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt and the Ruhr.

Job Market

The economy is diverse: trade fairs and events, automotive (Continental and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, with Wolfsburg nearby), insurance and finance, tyres and manufacturing, and a strong university and research presence. Salaries are solid and the job base is broad.
