Mönchengladbach: City Guide for Expats

Character and Overview

Once a powerhouse of the German textile industry — earning it the nickname "the Rhenish Manchester" — Mönchengladbach has transitioned to logistics, services and technology. It is a polycentric, fairly green city, best known nationally for its football club, Borussia Mönchengladbach. It lacks a major tourist draw but offers comfortable, affordable living and quick connections to Düsseldorf and the Netherlands.

Cost of Living

Mönchengladbach is affordable, well below the nearby Rhine capitals. Approximate 2025 figures:

Getting Around

Local transport (NEW/buses) is bus-based, with regional rail and S-Bahn links to Düsseldorf and the wider region. The Deutschlandticket (~58 EUR, subject to review) covers it. Düsseldorf is around 30 minutes by train, and the Dutch border is close. The flat terrain suits cycling.

Job Market

The economy centres on logistics, textile machinery and engineering (SMS group), retail and services, and a growing technology sector, supported by a university of applied sciences. Salaries are moderate; many residents commute to Düsseldorf and the Ruhr.

Expat Life and English

The international community is small and daily life is German-speaking. Mönchengladbach works best for those prioritising affordability and a quiet residential base over an expat scene.

Who It Suits

Mönchengladbach suits budget-conscious commuters and families who want affordable, green, residential living with quick access to Düsseldorf and the Netherlands.
