Schwerin: City Guide for Expats

Schwerin is the capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and, with around 95,000 residents, the smallest state capital in Germany — the only one with fewer than 100,000 people. Set among lakes and crowned by a fairy-tale castle, it offers a tranquil, scenic and very affordable life in Germany's north-east.

Snapshot

  • State: Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (capital)

  • Population: ~95,000

  • Character: Small, scenic lakeside capital with a storybook castle

Character and Overview

Schwerin is built around the Schweriner Schloss, a romantic 19th-century palace on its own island that now houses the state parliament and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Surrounded by a chain of lakes at the edge of the Mecklenburg Lake District, the city is green, quiet and unusually pretty. As a state capital its life centres on government and administration, and its small size gives it a relaxed, almost provincial pace. The Baltic coast and the lake region are close at hand.

Cost of Living

Schwerin is very affordable. Approximate 2025 figures:

  • Studio (warm, central): ~420–700 EUR per month

  • 1-bedroom (warm, central):Kaltmiete vs Warmmiete. ~550–880 EUR per month
Low costs and lots of nature. Confirm

Getting Around

Local transport runs trams and buses (operated by Nahverkehr Schwerin), with regional rail links to Hamburg, Rostock and Berlin. The Deutschlandticket (~58 EUR, subject to review) covers local and regional travel. The compact, lake-laced city is walkable and bike-friendly; a car is useful for exploring the rural surroundings.

Job Market

The economy is dominated by public administration and government (as the state capital), with healthcare, tourism, services and some manufacturing alongside. The job market is small and specialised; remote work or public-sector roles suit it best.

Expat Life and English

The international community is very small and daily life is entirely German-speaking. German is essential, and newcomers should expect a quiet, locally rooted environment rather than an expat scene.

Who It Suits

Schwerin suits those seeking a calm, scenic, affordable life near lakes and the Baltic — especially public-sector workers, remote workers and anyone prioritising nature and tranquillity over big-city amenities.
