Character and Overview
Founded by the Romans, Augsburg flourished as a Renaissance banking and trading centre under the Fugger merchant dynasty, whose legacy includes the Fuggerei — the world's oldest social housing settlement, still in use. The city's historic water-management system is UNESCO-listed. Today Augsburg is a handsome, walkable city with a strong identity, close enough to Munich for an easy commute but at a fraction of the cost.
Cost of Living
Augsburg is markedly cheaper than Munich while sharing Bavarian quality of life. Approximate 2025 figures:

Getting Around
Local transport (swa) runs trams and buses, with regional rail links. The Deutschlandticket (~58 EUR, subject to review) covers local and regional travel, including the frequent trains to Munich (around 30–45 minutes). The compact centre is walkable and bike-friendly.
Job Market
Augsburg's economy spans aerospace (Premium Aerotec/Airbus), robotics and mechatronics (KUKA), machinery (MAN Energy Solutions), IT and environmental technology, plus a growing university. Many residents also commute to Munich. Salaries are good, especially in engineering.
Expat Life and English
The international community is modest. English works in the larger engineering firms, but daily life is in German. Learning German is important for settling in.
Who It Suits
Augsburg suits engineers and professionals who want Bavarian living and proximity to Munich without Munich's prices, and families seeking a historic, manageable city.
