Erfurt: City Guide for Expats

Erfurt is the capital of Thuringia, in the geographic centre of Germany, with around 213,000 residents. It boasts one of the best-preserved medieval old towns in the country and a central location that makes it a natural logistics and media hub.

Snapshot

  • State: Thuringia (capital)

  • Population: ~213,000

  • Character: Beautifully preserved medieval city, central and affordable

Character and Overview

Erfurt's medieval centre survived the war largely intact, and its Krämerbrücke — a fully inhabited, shop-lined merchants' bridge — is unique north of the Alps. The towering cathedral, timber-framed houses and winding lanes make it one of Germany's most charming smaller cities. Martin Luther studied here. Sitting almost exactly in the middle of Germany, Erfurt is a crossroads for rail and logistics, and home to the national children's broadcaster KiKA. It is affordable, walkable and surrounded by the green Thuringian countryside.

Cost of Living

Erfurt is affordable for a state capital. Approximate 2025 figures:

  • Studio (warm, central): ~480–800 EUR per month

  • 1-bedroom (warm, central):Kaltmiete vs Warmmiete. ~650–1,000 EUR per month

Getting Around

Local transport (EVAG) runs trams and buses, and Erfurt is a major ICE rail junction with fast links to Berlin, Munich and Frankfurt thanks to its central position. The Deutschlandticket (~58 EUR, subject to review) covers local and regional travel. The compact city is bike-friendly.

Job Market

The economy spans logistics (boosted by the central location), microelectronics (X-FAB and related firms), media (KiKA and production), horticulture and food, and public administration. Salaries are lower than the western average but matched by low living costs.

Expat Life and English

The international community is modest, and daily life runs in German. The university adds some diversity, but newcomers should plan on learning German.

Who It Suits

Erfurt suits those who want a genuinely beautiful, affordable, centrally located city with excellent rail links — especially in logistics, media or microelectronics — and who are happy to use German.
