Münster: City Guide for Expats

Münster, in the Westphalian countryside, has around 318,000 residents and a vast student population. Repeatedly ranked among Germany's most liveable cities, it is famous as the country's bicycle capital and for its beautifully reconstructed historic centre.

Snapshot

  • State: North Rhine-Westphalia (Westphalia)

  • Population: ~318,000

  • Character: Historic, prosperous, bike-mad university city

Character and Overview

Münster combines a grand, Catholic, prosperous heritage with the youthful energy of one of Germany's largest universities. The arcaded Prinzipalmarkt, the cathedral and the surrounding lanes were painstakingly rebuilt after the war, and the Peace of Westphalia that ended the Thirty Years' War was signed here in 1648. Locals get around by bike — affectionately called "Leeze" — on an unrivalled cycle network, and the Aasee lake and surrounding Münsterland countryside add to the high quality of life.

Cost of Living

Münster is prosperous and demand is high, keeping rents above the regional average. Approximate 2025 figures:

  • Studio (warm, central): ~600–1,000 EUR per month

  • 1-bedroom (warm, central):Kaltmiete vs Warmmiete. ~800–1,250 EUR per month
The large student demand keeps the market competitive. Confirm

Getting Around

Münster is built for cycling above all else, with an exceptional bike network. Buses (operated by Stadtwerke Münster) cover the rest, with regional rail links. The Deutschlandticket (~58 EUR, subject to review) covers public transport. Flat and compact, the city rarely requires a car.

Job Market

The economy is built on education and research (a very large university and university hospital), public administration, insurance and finance, retail and services. Salaries are moderate; the job base is stable and white-collar, with healthcare and academia especially strong.

Expat Life and English

The huge student body gives Münster a younger, moderately international feel, and English is reasonably usable in university circles. Everyday life and most jobs still require German.

Who It Suits

Münster suits students, academics, healthcare professionals and families who want a safe, beautiful, bike-friendly and highly liveable city, and who don't mind a competitive housing market.
